New York Mayor Eric Adams said the gunman who killed four people—including a police officer—inside a Manhattan skyscraper on Monday evening likely targeted the headquarters of the National Football League, which is located in the building.

Key Facts
In a press conference, New York City Mayor Eric Adams identified the slain police officer as 36-year-old Didarul Islam, who had been working with the New York City Police Department for three and a half years.
Real estate executive Wesley LePatner was also among the four killed on Monday, Blackstone confirmed to Forbes.
One person who was wounded during the shooting remained in critical condition, Adams said.
New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch identified the gunman as Shane Tamura from Las Vegas and said he had a “documented mental health history.”
Tisch said Tamura took his own life by shooting himself in the chest and added that his motives are still under investigation.
The shooting took place at 345 Park Avenue, a skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan that houses several high-profile tenants, including the investment firm Blackstone Group, the accounting firm KPMG and the NFL headquarters.
The NFL Players Association said in a statement Tuesday that it is “deeply saddened” by the shooting, and extended “sincere condolences and support” to the building’s employees and the victims’ families.

President Donald Trump said he trusts “our law enforcement agencies to get to the bottom of why this crazed lunatic committed such a senseless act of violence” on TruthSocial Tuesday, adding that his heart is with the families of the victims, including the NYPD officer “who made the ultimate sacrifice.”
What Do We Know About The Gunman Shane Tamura?
Tisch shared more details about Tamura during a press conference late on Monday night. The 27-year-old Las Vegas resident had arrived in New York City just hours before the shooting and after driving cross-country for several days. Surveillance video showed he exited a “double-parked black BMW,” while carrying an M4 rifle in his right hand, the commissioner said. The BMW is registered to Tamura and inside the vehicle, police found a rifle case with rounds, a loaded revolver, magazines, a backpack and medications prescribed to the gunman. Tisch said an initial investigation has revealed that Tamura’s vehicle travelled cross-country through Colorado on July 26, Nebraska and Iowa on July 27, and New Jersey “as recently as” 4:24 p.m. ET on Monday. The New York commissioner said law enforcement in Nevada informed them that Tamura has a “documented mental health history,” but did not share any details. Adams told Fox affiliate WNYW on Tuesday morning that the gunman’s likely target was the NFL headquarters but he “appeared to have gone to the wrong floor.”
What Do We Know About The Sequence Of Events?
According to Tisch, the first emergency call about an active shooter in the building was made at 6:28 p.m. ET. After pulling up in his car, the shooter entered the building’s lobby turned right “and immediately open fire” on the NYPD officer. The gunman then shot a woman hiding behind a pillar before walking through the lobby and “spraying it with gunfire.” The shooter then walked up to the elevator area where he shot “a security guard who was taking cover behind the security desk,” the police commissioner noted. One more person, a male, was shot in the lobby, before the gunman rode the elevator to the 33rd floor—which houses the offices of the real estate firm Rudin Management. “One person was struck and killed on that floor” before the gunman “proceeds down a hallway and shoots himself in the chest,” Tisch added.
Crucial Quote
Adams paid tribute to the officer who was killed in the shooting, saying: “He was saving lives. He was protecting New Yorkers. He embodies what this city is all about. He’s a true-blue New Yorker, not only in a uniform he wore.”
What Do We Know About The Slain Officer?
Didarul Islam, 36, was an immigrant from Bangladesh who had been working as a New York police officer for three and a half years. He worked at a precinct in the Bronx and was one of two New York police officers working as paid security detail at the tower. Tisch said: “He was doing the job that we asked him to do. He put himself in harms way, he made the ultimate sacrifice…He died as he lived, a hero.” The commissioner said Islam had two children and a wife who is pregnant with their third child.
What Do We Know About The Other Shooting Victims?
Aside from the police officer, identities of the shooting victims have not yet been made public. However, the National Football League—whose headquarters was located in the tower where the shooting took place—issued a statement to the New York Times saying one of its employees was seriously injured in the attack. It is unclear if the employee in question is the fifth shooting victim who Adams said was in critical condition. The league’s commissioner, Roger Goodell, said: “He is currently in the hospital and in stable condition.”
