AMD will acquire artificial intelligence firm World Labs in an $8.2 billion deal, the chip designer announced Monday, meaning World Labs’ co-founder Fei-Fei Li, known as the “Godmother of AI,” will join AMD’s ranks.

Key Facts
- AMD announced the “definitive agreement,” framing it as a means of meeting the massive compute demand behind the AI boom.
- AMD said World Labs’ expertise will help advance its strategy to deliver AI infrastructure, adding the partnership will aid in developing the “hardware, software and systems.”
- Li, who co-founded World Labs in 2023, will join AMD as its executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting to AMD chief Lisa Su.
- The acquisition will be carried out through an all-stock transaction and is expected to close by the end of the year.
Tangent
AMD’s stock closed down 3.6% to $607.87 on Monday afternoon, inching up 0.1% in after-hours trading following the announcement of the acquisition. AMD shares are up 183% since the start of the year, when they traded around the $223 mark.
Key Background
The acquisition will help AMD narrow the gap between it and its primary competitor, Nvidia, which has tools for 3D AI training. World Labs develops spatial-intelligence AI models that can reconstruct and simulate 3D environments from text, images and video inputs, meaning the company will fill in a gap AMD has had compared to Nvidia.
AMD’s addition of Li may also be a major selling point for the many AI researchers who currently rely on Nvidia hardware for their work. AMD, like Nvidia, has surfed a massive wave of hardware demand behind AI’s increasing popularity and business integration, recording $11.5 billion in revenue and $2.3 billion in net income during the company’s second quarter of 2026.
Data center revenue more than doubled year-over-year to $6.7 billion, making up more than half of AMD’s revenue. The company also reported $808 million in capital expenditure in its second quarter.
