The regional practice that turned dentistry into a high-growth integrated health empire

Dr Daniel Tan transformed a humble Launceston dental practice into a high-growth, multimillion-dollar dental and integrated health enterprise, resetting the bar for regional clinicians and redefining the future of integrated care.

In regional Australia, healthcare businesses are not typically associated with explosive growth, disruptive innovation, or transformational exits. Dentistry is generally viewed as a stable but conventional industry, built on incremental growth, more chairs, more clinicians, and more locations.

But at Launceston’s Dr Daniel Tan & Associates (DDTA) Dental, founders Daniel and Natalie Tan have built something radically different: an integrated healthcare ecosystem that combines dentistry, skincare, longevity, alternative therapies, and preventative health. In doing so, the visionary pair may have created a blueprint for the future of healthcare.

“We’re creating a whole-person health and wellness journey. Treating each patient in multiple complementary avenues within one practice,” says Daniel.

The business began as a traditional dental practice and grew accordingly. As the Tans’ personal relationship with wellness also grew, they grew tired of flying to the mainland for treatments. Soon, DDTA Dental became home to Launceston’s first infrared sauna, and the rest is oral history.

“I was keen for us to invest in a sauna so that we could personally enjoy its benefits. Dan suggested that we install it at the practice rather than home so that our patients could use it, too. It was hugely popular, and we quickly realised that we’d set ourselves on a different path,” says Natalie.

Today, DDTA Dental encompasses dermal therapies, functional nutrition, Ayurvedic medicine, and longevity modalities such as the Novothor red light therapy bed, hyperbaric oxygen therapy and IV vitamin therapy, all working in harmony, with shared goals.

“We knew we couldn’t just throw in more random treatments. That would be like running multiple businesses. So, the biggest question was how to merge everything,” says Daniel.

What might seem novel is rooted in a holistic healthcare framework, supported by a growing body of research linking oral health to overall well-being. It is also a powerful business model.

According to Daniel, DDTA Dental experienced revenue growth of more than 850% over roughly a decade, culminating in the sale of its dental arm at a valuation approaching 40 times the Tans’ original investment.

In a landmark deal, National Dental Care acquired a portion of the business, delivering one of the largest dental practice sales in Tasmanian history, commanding an initial valuation of more than $13 million, with further considerations, payable over the following four years.

A premium long-term lease agreement unlocked more than $2 million in additional commercial valuation while establishing a new Tasmanian benchmark for healthcare commercial lease rates per square metre.

“Healthcare is changing quickly. If you focus on adaptation, you’ll keep up. The numbers show it,” says Daniel.

In an industry and region rarely associated with this level of growth or sophisticated commercial structuring, the sale has drawn significant attention.

But for Daniel, the transformation was as much philosophical as financial.

Born in Malaysia and educated at the University of Adelaide, Daniel moved to Tasmania after graduating with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery. During his formative years in dentistry, he began questioning whether the standard model of care was too narrow, with its focus on treatment rather than prevention and its disconnect from broader health outcomes.

That thinking gradually intensified, fuelling a fascination with biological dentistry, longevity, and health technology. Thanks largely to “wellness-obsessed” Natalie, the business invested heavily in all three, expanding its clinical footprint, establishing a digitised in-house laboratory, and purchasing advanced wellness technologies.

“Wellness is everything. If you’re getting the body right, I attribute a lot of that to our success,” says Natalie.

It was a gamble, but the Tans bet on innovation. Instead of scaling conventionally through expansion, DDTA Dental focuses on diversification, integration, and patient lifetime value.

The result is not only stronger revenue growth but also deeper engagement and brand loyalty. The expansion also arrived at a fortuitous moment, when wellness and longevity were transitioning from fringe culture into the mainstream. As consumers increasingly prioritise health optimisation, recovery, and long-term wellbeing, preventative health practices, wellness centres, and longevity clinics are attracting institutional investment. The Tans’ timing positioned them directly within that shift.

“We recognised early on that patients were looking for preventative care,” says Daniel.

Scientific understanding of the relationship between oral and systemic health continues to evolve. A growing body of research links oral inflammation and periodontal disease with broader chronic health conditions, reinforcing Daniel’s thesis that dentistry shouldn’t operate in isolation from the rest of the body.

“Instead of just telling you that you have gum disease and treating it, we look at the body as a whole. We ask how we can optimise your health, so that everything flows into place,” says Daniel.

With the breakout success of DDTA Dental, the mindful dentist is now known not only for his skill with a drill, but also for his entrepreneurial instinct and genuine dogfooding. Both Tans walk the wellness walk, using the practice’s growing suite of treatments and technology, and carrying their personal dedication to whole-person health into everything they do.

“We live and breathe this stuff. We’re all in. We talk to patients about our routine. They love it. It’s everything to us,” says Natalie.

The sale is attracting greater interest in this approach. While Daniel remains a practising clinician at DDTA Dental, he is also stepping into another role, as mentor and business strategist for leaders looking to scale sustainable, diversified businesses.

Because at its core, this isn’t a story about health and wellness. It’s a story about vision, about risk, and about recognising that traditional industries can still be radically reinvented. Especially for founders in regional Australia, that may be the most important lesson of all.
