When Alumicorp launched nearly a decade ago, it was a nimble newcomer in New South Wales’ competitive local supply chain.
Today, the Smithfield-based operation has evolved into a premier provider of end-to-end metal fabrication and finishing solutions. General manager William Wei credits much of this growth to a foundational strategy of targeting flagship projects.
Alumicorp has gradually built a strong reputation for handling complex, large-scale demands by leveraging a complete suite of in-house services, including material supply, laser cutting, welding, CNC routing, bending, and sandblasting.
Wei says the portfolio that the company has built over the last decade is among the most impressive in the country, featuring landmark projects such as Western Sydney Airport, Sydney’s IMAX, Sydney Metros, Hospital, Data Centres, and Sydney Football Stadium.
Now, Alumicorp is building on that momentum with a new factory in Brisbane’s Rocklea. At three times the size of its Sydney facility, the site positions the company to tackle a host of infrastructure projects leading up to the 2032 Olympic Games. For Wei, this national expansion has been years in the making.

“Growing up, my father constantly reminded me to look far ahead, think big, be generous, and never let small distractions hold you back,” says Wei.
That advice trained him to ignore short-term setbacks and invest in his workforce, realising early that next-gen machinery means little without the right employees and internal drive.
“That is why, in our business, we prioritise people first,” says Wei. “Skills can always be developed, but attitude, ambition, and character are far more valuable.”
Q&A
In the early days, what were the biggest hurdles you faced, and how did you find your way through them?

We entered the industry when uncertainty was everywhere. As a new company competing against long-established players, we were navigating economic volatility, COVID lockdowns, supply chain disruptions, and constantly shifting market conditions. There were moments where the future felt completely unpredictable.
But adversity became our advantage. Instead of trying to be the biggest company in the room, we focused on being the most adaptable. We listened closely to customers, identified market gaps, and moved quickly when others hesitated. At the same time, we chose to collaborate where possible, working alongside competitors to improve collectively and grow the market rather than competing purely against one another.
Those years taught us resilience, discipline, and the importance of staying customer-focused no matter how difficult the environment became. Looking back, the toughest periods shaped our culture far more than the easy ones ever could.
Who were your earliest career mentors?
My greatest role models were my parents, particularly my father. He built everything through hard work, sacrifice, and persistence, and he taught me lessons that still shape the way I lead today.
One thing he always said was: “Do right by people. Help first, and success will follow.” That stayed with me because it goes beyond business.
I’ve always believed that long-term success comes from trust, integrity, and genuine care for people. When you build relationships the right way, you attract good people around you, and together you create something much bigger than yourself.
What major industry shifts must leaders pay attention to right now?

The industry is going through a major transformation. Sustainability, technology, and speed of innovation are absolutely crucial.
Clients today want smarter, more sustainable, and more meaningful environments. At the same time, artificial intelligence, automation, and digital systems are reshaping how businesses operate, communicate, and deliver results.
But beyond technology, I believe the biggest shift is cultural. The next generation wants purpose, growth, and meaning in the workplace. Businesses that fail to invest in people and culture will struggle to attract the talent needed to thrive in the future.
What drives you at this stage of your career?
What drives me is knowing that there is still so much more to build, improve, and contribute to the world. I genuinely believe we are only scratching the surface of what’s possible.
For me, success has never been purely financial. It’s about creating something meaningful, building opportunities for people, solving real problems, and leaving a lasting legacy. Seeing people around me grow, succeed, and exceed their own expectations is one of the most rewarding parts of the journey.
I’m motivated by impact, growth, and the idea that what we create today can positively influence future generations.
Beyond business metrics, what impact do you hope your work has on people, communities, or the world?
I hope our work helps create spaces and environments that people genuinely connect with: places that inspire, uplift, and improve everyday life.
Internally, I want our business to create opportunities where people can grow personally and professionally, pursue bigger ambitions, and build fulfilling careers.
Externally, I hope we continue delivering projects that strengthen communities and raise the standard for quality, trust, and innovation within the industry.
At the end of the day, success is not only measured by revenue or growth; it is measured by the positive impact you leave behind on people and the communities you serve.

What’s the boldest goal you’ve set yourself for the next five years?
One of my boldest goals is to take our operations global and scale the business at an entirely new level. We’ve built strong foundations, developed efficient systems, and refined what we do exceptionally well. The next step is bringing that capability to international markets.
But more importantly, I want to build a globally recognised brand that represents innovation, quality, and people-first leadership. I want to prove that ambitious growth and strong values can coexist, and that businesses can scale globally while still staying grounded in integrity, culture, and purpose.
