Measles cases have surged to their highest levels since 1991, according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with a former Food and Drug Administration chief warning the case count is likely much higher than what is being reported.

Key Facts
A total of 5,182 measles cases have been recorded by the CDC so far this year, with 43 outbreaks accounting for the vast majority of cases.
Scott Gottlieb, who served as the FDA’s commissioner from 2017 to 2019, said in a post Friday the U.S. measles outbreak is “much larger than what’s reported.”
Gottlieb also warned, “We will lose our Measles elimination status this month, and it will take years of responsible public health management to get it back.”
