The Audemars Piguet x Swatch ‘Royal Pop’ will go on sale May 16. The watch collection combines Swatch’s technical innovation with Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak design

The much-hyped, much-celebrated—and much-debated—Audemars Piguet x Swatch “Royal Pop” has officially arrived. The watch will go on sale May 16, with the two companies releasing the first official images ahead of launch.
The Royal Pop stems from the unlikely pairing of fashion watch giant Swatch and high-horology manufacture Audemars Piguet. According to the brands, both the name and design draw inspiration from Pop Art, the 1950s movement that blurred the lines between fine art and mass culture through bold colors and imagery from everyday life.
At first glance, the collection appears to lean more heavily toward Swatch DNA than Audemars Piguet, thanks to its eight vivid color combinations, Bioceramic case construction, and proprietary Swatch movement. The watch is also presented as a pocket watch inspired by the vintage Swatch POP concept.

Still, there are numerous references to the iconic Royal Oak throughout the design.
In a joint statement, the companies said the collection “will change the way we wear watches,” noting that the Royal Pop can be worn around the neck, on the wrist, in a pocket, or attached to a handbag. A removable stand also allows it to function as a desk clock.
The watch is powered by the manually wound version of the Swatch SISTEM51 movement, the only Swiss-made mechanical movement assembled entirely through automated production. The movement incorporates 15 patents, delivers a 90-hour power reserve and features an anti-magnetic Nivachron balance spring with laser-based factory precision adjustment. Notably, the Nivachron spring was developed in collaboration with Audemars Piguet and is used in several of the brand’s models.
Partially visible through a transparent caseback, the movement is offered in two configurations. One version features a Lépine-style layout with the crown positioned at 12 o’clock and a minimalist two-hand display. Available in six models, it emphasizes symmetry and simplicity. The second is a Savonnette-style pocket watch with the crown at 3 o’clock and a small seconds subdial at 6 o’clock.

The eight models were chosen to reference both the eight-sided Royal Oak bezel and its signature eight screws. Continuing that theme, the Royal Pop incorporates eight patents tied to its case construction, reflecting the complexity of the original Royal Oak architecture, which combines an octagonal bezel, circular elements and a barrel-shaped middle case.
One patent centers on the barrel drum design, which doubles as a power reserve indicator. When the barrel chambers appear gray, the mainspring coils are visible, signaling the watch needs winding. When the chambers shift to gold, the mainspring is fully wound and operating at maximum power.

The Royal Oak’s signature “Petite Tapisserie” dial pattern, a defining design element since 1972, appears on all eight Royal Pop models. The octagonal bezel and exposed hexagonal screws—among the most recognizable elements of the Royal Oak—also carry over into the collaboration. On the white “HUIT BLANC” model, the eight screws are rendered in eight different colors. Across the collection, the screws on both the bezel and caseback are welded directly to the case.
Additional technical details include a vertical satin-brushed finish on the bezel and caseback, digital printing on the movement caseback and Bioceramic construction for the crown, case and lanyard attachments. The hour markers and hands are coated with Grade A Super-LumiNova, while both sapphire crystals feature anti-reflective coating.
The watch head attaches to the clip-on back and can be removed as desired, reinforcing the collection’s emphasis on versatility and personalization.
The Audemars Piguet x Swatch Royal Pop will be available beginning May 16 exclusively at selected Swatch stores listed on the company’s website. As with previous Swatch collaborations, purchases will be limited to one watch per person, per day, and per store.
