After a long, three-year absence, Qantas Airways will again offer its popular Sydney to New York flights on June 14 – but this time with a hint of luxury. The airline has partnered with luxury Australian designer Rebecca Vallance to offer business class passengers limited-edition pyjamas and luxury amenity packs.

Qantas is one of only a few airlines worldwide that offers its business class passengers the famous Qantas “sleeper suit”. The Rebecca Vallance special edition pyjamas and amenity kit – which pay homage to NYC and the Avenue Astoria Collection print (a nod to New York’s iconic Waldorf Astoria) – is likely to become a collector’s item.

From mid-next month, the airline will offer flights from Sydney to New York, with a short stopover in Auckland, New Zealand. Qantas temporarily halted flights to the city in 2020 amid the disruption of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

For Vallance, who joins an esteemed list of fashion designers who have worked with Qantas on designing special edition PJs, the collaboration is a huge career highlight.

At the launch of the collaboration today, Vallance held back tears as she recalled how she went from “the girl from Ballarat” to an internationally recognised designer”.

“I grew up and never thought this was on the cards for me,” Vallance says.

The design features a monogram of the Qantas ‘Roo’ and Rebecca Vallance logo and incorporates the flight numbers QF3 and QF4 for the updated New York Route. The palette of blues and subtle Art Deco undertones reflects the heritage, glamour, and sophistication of the Waldorf Astoria’s hotel architecture. Thompson told guests at the launch that the glamourous amenities bag can even be re-used as a handbag once passengers land in NYC.

For Vallance, the collaboration and the theme – New York – have special meaning. She says the city has always felt like a “second home” and she hopes to open a bricks and mortar store in SoHo in the near future.

“We curated the bespoke Rebecca Vallance design as an homage to one of the world’s most vibrant and exciting cities, with inspiration from our latest collection – ‘Avenue Astoria’,” she says.

A limited number of Rebecca Vallance Qantas Pyjamas and Amenity kits will be available to purchase at Qantas Marketplace through a points redemption purchase.
