Rado’s first Australian flagship joins the Horological party on Collins Street

Rado, the Swatch Group-backed brand that has pioneered innovative materials in watchmaking for over 50 years, has signaled an unprecedented commitment to the Australian market — with the arrival of its first standalone boutique in Melbourne.

The brand, which specialises in design-forward skews like the Anatom or Captain Cook diver, officially opened its doors at 298 Collins Street last Thursday: adding to the already considerable density of luxury watch retailers on the popular Victorian high street.

True to its status as an enthusiast-led brand, Rado’s Melbourne flagship makes a splash of the small-yet-mighty variety. The facade, cut in elegant gold arches, invites shoppers in to explore a range of ceramic and composite timepieces; in an environ more closely resembling a nook at your favourite high-end cocktail bar rather than the traditional, bone-dry watch store.

Throughout the space, several showcases chart the brand’s development in the field of alloys and non-metallics — key pillars in Rado’s contemporary renown as the self-described “master of materials”. For shoppers, there is a notable dynamic of everything being within arm’s reach: the result of the brand’s global leadership team having demanded an “immersion-led” concept for its first standalone store in Australia.

Of these, the proprietary “high-tech ceramic” — first unveiled in 1986 for serialised production — is a defining and recurrent theme. Registering a hardness of 1,250 on the Vickers scale, the material is feather-light, thermo-adaptive, and almost impervious to scratching — ideally suited to Aussie enthusiasts whose lifestyle, by and large, is defined by active, adventurous pursuits.

The brand’s commitment to the Australian market — and to Melbourne, in particular — was underscored by a starry cast of guests on opening day. In attendance were local ambassadors Cameron Green and Ashleigh Barty, the latter of whom is celebrating a decade of partnership with Rado in 2026.

The duo were introduced by Adrian Bosshard, global CEO of Rado, who traveled to Australia to mark this significant moment for the brand.

Consistent with these sporting personalities in which Rado has placed much stock, the emphasis for brand leadership in this new, standalone chapter is to double down on appealing to certain values entrenched in the Australian shopper’s psyche. Namely: quality, a strong dollar-to-value proposition, and functionality.

“Melbourne, with its strong appreciation for design, sport and culture, is the perfect setting for our new chapter in the region,” says Bosshard.

“Australia has become an increasingly important market for Rado and we are excited to deepen our presence here through a dedicated boutique experience. More than anything, we want every visitor to discover our values and to truly feel the Rado difference.”
