Key Takeaways
  • Claire Boucher, known publicly as “Grimes,” filed a “petition to establish parental relationship” in a California court last week, Page Six first reported Tuesday, though the actual filings are not visible to the public.
  • Grimes has claimed Musk will not give her access to one of their three children, posting in a now-deleted tweet: “tell Elon to let me see my son or plz respond to my lawyer,” according to TMZ.
  • The dispute seems to be over the couple’s youngest child, a boy with the name Techno Mechanicus, whom the pair secretly welcomed last year and whose birth was revealed in a September review of Musk’s new biography.
  • Grimes’ court filing is not an uncommon one when an unmarried couple shares a child, a family attorney told the San Francisco Standard, and is typically filed alongside requests for child support and custody agreements.
  • Samantha Bley DeJean, the attorney representing Grimes, per the Page Six report, did not immediately respond to Forbes request for comment Tuesday, nor did Musk or his attorney, Alex Spiro.
Key Background

Grimes and Musk dated on and off from 2018 to 2021 and welcomed their first child, a son named X Æ A-Xii, in May of 2020. Their daughter, Exa Dark Sideræl, was born via surrogate the next year. In an interview this summer, Grimes said her relationship with the Tesla and SpaceX CEO was “like, the best internship ever.” Musk has previously said, “Having children is saving the world,” and has fathered a total of 11 kids with three women.

His first son, named Nevada, died of sudden infant death syndrome when he was 10 weeks old in 2000. He went on to have five more children with Nevada’s mother, Canadian author Justine Wilson, who are now between the ages of 16 and 18. In 2021, Musk welcomed twins with Neuralink director of operations and special projects Shivon Zilis.
