Kic co-founder Laura Henshaw has revealed she’s stepping down from her role as CEO of the fitness app, with Jane Martino, the co-founder of Smiling Mind, taking the reins.
Henshaw shared the news on Thursday morning revealing that herself and 30 Under 30 alumna Steph Claire Smith have been working with Martino in an advisory capacity for two years. The decision to step back into a founder role has been in the works for about 18 months.
“When I stepped into the role, we knew it wouldn’t be a forever thing and had always hoped we’d get to a stage with the business where we could bring in a leader I could hand the baton over to,” Henshaw said.
“Someone who would continue to champion our amazing community… and who could not only work alongside us on our vision but expand it.”
Henshaw, who is pregnant with her first child, teased “huge” upcoming plans for the business as it enters the “next phase of the journey”, which includes bringing more mental health content into the app, which will become more of a wellness ecosystem.
“Working as an advisor for the last two years, and having the honour of coaching Laura Henshaw and Steph Claire Smith, has brought me immense joy and created impact for both Steph and Laura personally, and the Kic business,” Martino said.
“This impact, Laura’s decision to step back from the CEO role and the large ambition we have for Kic moving forward, made my decision to run this incredible business, built by two of the most respected women in wellness in this country, a very easy one.”
Kic, which evolved from an e-book to the Keep It Cleaner app in 2018, has been focused on making healthy living as sustainable and attainable as possible, through positive messaging, workouts, recipes and community.
Last year, the company told Forbes its revenue has grown year-on-year since 2015, and its non-app revenue streams (i.e. its podcast KICPOD) were major growth drivers.
