Forbes Launches New Generative AI Search Tool, Adelaide, Powered By Google Cloud

Innovation

Forbes announced today the beta launch of Adelaide, its purpose-built news search tool using Google Cloud. The tool offers visitors AI-driven personalized recommendations and insights from Forbes’ trusted journalism. The launch makes Forbes one of the first major news publishers to provide personalized, relevant news content recommendations for its global readers leveraging generative AI.

Starting today, select visitors to Forbes.com can access Adelaide through the website, where they can explore content spanning the previous twelve months, offering deeper insights into the topics they are searching for. Adelaide, named after the wife of Forbes founder B.C. Forbes, has been crafted in-house by Forbes’ dedicated tech and data team, ensuring seamless integration and optimal functionality.

What sets Adelaide apart is its search- and conversation-based approach, making content discovery easier and more intuitive for Forbes’ global audience. The tool generates individualized responses to user queries based exclusively on Forbes articles, and is built using Google Cloud Vertex AI Search and Conversation. With this integration, Adelaide will comb through Forbes’ trusted content archive from the past twelve months, continuously learning and adapting to individual reader preferences.

Adelaide represents an exciting addition to Forbes’ existing AI framework. In 2019, Forbes introduced Bertie, an AI-based tool that provided recommendations to Forbes journalists regarding their writing style, also built on Google Cloud. Unlike Bertie, Adelaide will eventually be accessible to all 150 million Forbes readers, ushering in an entirely new and enhanced search experience for the media industry.

In 2018, Forbes chose Google Cloud as its cloud partner as the company embarked on its digital transformation journey. With rapid change within the publishing industry, Google Cloud has been a critical partner in helping Forbes realize the impact of AI and ML. And in doing so, the company is able to help its writers tell stories and connect with their audiences.

Forbes, which has a 106-year history of entrepreneurial innovation, has consistently demonstrated a pioneering approach to technological experimentation. In 2021, the company introduced its proprietary first-party data platform, ForbesOne, which uses machine learning and AI to create personalized content recommendations and product offerings. The introduction of Adelaide furthers Forbes’ commitment to experimenting with new technologies to strengthen its proposition for consumers and partners.

“Forbes was an early adopter of AI nearly five years ago – and now AI is a foundational technology for our first-party data platform, ForbesOne,” said Vadim Supitskiy, Chief Digital and Information Officer, Forbes. “As we look to the future, we are enabling our audiences to better understand how AI can be a tool for good and enhance their lives. Adelaide is poised to revolutionize how Forbes audiences engage with news and media content, offering a more personalized and insightful experience from start to finish.”

Forbes believes that using data and the latest technology not only improves overall audience experience but enhances the ability to find content audiences are looking for, according to David Johnson, Chief Data Officer, Forbes. “Today’s announcement is an exciting development in our journey with AI, as we become one of the first major publishers to partner with Google Cloud in this space.”

“From the publication of its first magazine more than 100 years ago to becoming a modern digital platform, Forbes has always been an innovator with technology,” said Anil Jain, Global Managing Director, Strategic Consumer Industries, Google Cloud. “By building Adelaide using Vertex AI Search and Conversation, Forbes is bringing a more personalized experience to their entire audience.”

In its next phase, Forbes is working to improve and enhance Adelaide by enhancing the models to provide more personalized experiences and contextual conversations so that the users have continuity between engagements with Adelaide and get better-summarized responses.
