Apple unveils iPhone 17 lineup with new ultra-thin ‘iPhone Air’

Innovation

Apple has taken the wraps off its 2025 devices, led by the launch of the iPhone Air – the thinnest iPhone the company has ever made. At just 5.6mm thick, the titanium-framed model was the standout reveal at the tech giant’s ‘awe-dropping’ event in Cupertino – that also included the iPhone 17, new Pro models, AirPods Pro 3 and updates to the Apple Watch.
Apple has launched the iPhone 17 lineup, led by the new ultra-thin iPhone Air at 5.6mm. Here’s what’s new with the iPhone 17, Pro and Pro Max, plus AirPods Pro 3 and Apple Watch updates – with Australian prices and release date.

Key Background

The iPhone Air is the main announcement. At 5.6mm thick and framed in titanium, it is the thinnest iPhone Apple has produced. The device arrives as rivals such as Samsung continue to push thin and foldable designs.

Analysts at JP Morgan expect shipments of the Air to reach between 10 and 15 million units in the second half of 2025, a smaller slice of overall iPhone volumes but enough to test demand.

Apple shares fell 1.4% after the event, with investors reacting to the focus on hardware and the absence of updates to Siri or broader AI products.

The rest of the line-up – the iPhone 17, new Pro models, Apple Watch updates and AirPods Pro 3 0 are incremental upgrades. Apple said the new AirPods offer stronger noise cancellation.

Crucial Quote

“The all-new iPhone Air is so powerful, yet impossibly thin and light, that you really have to hold it to believe it’s real. This huge leap in design and engineering is only made possible through Apple innovation, especially Apple silicon,” said John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering.
